Where’s Waldo found on Wii, DS, PC

Ubisoft promises to take gamers on The Fantastic Journey with striped globetrotter this September.

Ubisoft first let players explore the high-stakes hide-and-seek stealth genre with 2002’s Splinter Cell. For 2007’s Assassin’s Creed, the company took the genre out of the shadows and into the crowds.

This September, the publisher will let gamers tackle the stealth genre as the hunter instead of the hunted when it releases Where’s Waldo? The Fantastic Journey for the Wii and DS, PC, and Mac. Ubisoft today announced the deal in cooperation with developer Ludia Inc. and Classic Media, rights-holder to the popular children’s book and character.

Much like the Where’s Waldo books, The Fantastic Journey will be a “hidden object” game, in which players scour cluttered scenes in search of Waldo, his friends, and a variety of distinctive items. A multiplayer mode will allow up to four players to get competitive with their search, using power-ups to cover an opponent’s view with paint or make hidden objects sparkle on their own screen.

Ludia Inc. is no stranger to working on licensed properties, but it usually turned to television for source material. The Montreal-based studio has developed games based on American Idol, The Price is Right, Hell’s Kitchen, Press Your Luck, and Family Feud.

Battlefield Heroes enlists 1 million

EA DICE’s free-to-play shooter hits milestone less than four weeks after release.

Early last year, Electronic Arts announced a new Web and microtransaction-based model called Play 4 Free, with Battlefield Heroes to inaugurate the program. Despite a few delays in beta testing, EA DICE’s third-person shooter is now rolling through its fourth week of release, and today, the publisher revealed it has surpassed 1 million sign-ups.

Although the game has registered a sizable number of players since its June 25 launch, it’s unclear how many will buy into the title’s microtransaction system, which is the primary revenue stream for this free-to-play shooter. According to EA, the PC-exclusive title generates income through advertisements and the purchase of in-game items and character customizations. As detailed in GameSpot’s hands-on preview of Battlefield Heroes, the shooter features an over-the-top aesthetic and centers around multiplayer gameplay.

Battlefield Heroes faces the challenge of standing out not only in a crowded field of shooters, but also a crowded field of Battlefield games. Last week saw the launch of Battlefield 1943 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 following this winter for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. There’s also Battlefield 3, which may not be out until considerably later, with EA COO John Pleasants stating the game wouldn’t launch before April 2010.

Flash Player 9 is required to watch this video.

NFS Shift drift mode revealed (w/ screens and video) (Need for Speed SHIFT)

From the official NFS website:

"After a few weeks of quiet since E3 we’re pleased to reveal a new game mode for Need for Speed SHIFT: Drifting. In the last few years the sport has rocketed in popularity to point where there are large, successful tournaments around the world. When it came time to add it to SHIFT we wanted to ensure the mode was treated with the same degree of accuracy as the rest of the game so we worked closely with Team Falken driver and World Champion Vaughn Gittin JR. Initially the plan was for Vaughn to play the game a few times and give some feedback but he ended up spending more than 100 hours with the team to make sure the Drift experience was as close to real-life as possible.

The team have worked exceptionally hard to ensure the mode replicated the true driving sensation of Drifting and created the same immersive experience as the rest of the racing in SHIFT – just check out the detail inside Vaughn’s Mustang if you want more detail of this. While you could already expect the physics to be as realistic as possible, particular praise should go to the car team who’ve managed to re-create some classic Drift cars into the game.

Designing and coding a drift mode has always been a very tricky experience particularly when trying to make it accessible for new gamers and hardcore gamers alike so the design team spent a lot of time working to make sure the mode is as hard (or as easy) as you want it to be. For new gamers an Amateur setting teaches the basic of Drifting and then slowly ups the skill level until they can complete against the best."
