Shippin’ Out July 12-18: NCAA Football 10, Unbound Saga

EA’s college football sim and Sony’s comic-style brawler slam onto retail; NIS America’s quirky strategy title Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman also surfaces on PSN.
Going into the second full week of July, there’s no relief for gamers seeking a flood of new releases. However, the spigot isn’t completely dry, with a few notable titles hitting the retail market. Electronic Arts’ NCAA Football 10 leads the charge, available Tuesday for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable. The football sim features a new “player lock” system, in which players can bind the camera to locate and follow any athlete on the field. The bound character can then be controlled as the sports action unfolds.
For the PSP, Unbound Saga is jumping out from the comic book world. This side-scrolling brawler is based on a story whose characters are aware they are heroes in a work of fiction. Protagonists Rick and Lori trek through 10 scenarios on a quest to discover why they’re trapped in a fantasy world. Also on the Sony portable console is NIS America’s unusual and long-winded title Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This? The 8-bit-style strategy game allows players to create deadly dungeons filled with a menagerie of monsters. Both of these PSP games will only be downloadable from the PlayStation Network.

Shippin’ Out July 5-11: The Bigs 2, Tales of Monkey Island

2K Sports’ baseball slugger and Telltale’s cartoon pirate adventure episode sail into retail while BioShock/Oblivion bundle and ARMA II report for duty.
After a July 4th weekend that saw a myriad of fireworks spangle the sky, gamers may find that this week’s game selection is especially bleak by comparison, with only a handful of new releases.
One new game, at least, will allow Americans to celebrate one of their country’s iconic mainstays: baseball. In 2K Sports’ latest baseball game, The Bigs 2, players will notice several modifications over its predecessor, including a wheelhouse pitching mechanic, an updated rookie challenge mode, and regular Season mode. The E-rated game will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation Portable.
Telltale Games will release the first chapter of its episodic adventure series Tales of Monkey Island for the PC and Wii this week exclusively as a digital download. The upcoming chapter from the Monkey Island franchise will feature original cartoony characters such as pirate Guybrush Threepwood and the ghost LeChuck. The first chapter, Launch of the Screaming Narwhal, will come out this week, with each of the following four chapters to be released every month for the next four months. Chapter one will initially be available only on WiiWare and the publisher’s website.
2K Games will release a new bundle of the dystopic first-person shooter BioShock and fantasy RPG Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The BioShock & The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Bundle will bring together two commercially and critically acclaimed titles, with BioShock and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion both shipping more than 1.5 million copies less than three weeks after release.
Rounding out the pack is 505 Games’ modern first-person shooter ARMA II. The game has already been available in Europe and for worldwide download on Steam, but will finally hit North American shelves in physical form this week. The follow-up to ArmA: Armed Assault, this successor features new characters, improved AI, and an online multiplayer mode.

Downloadable-only PSP sequel will not be joining Wii remake of Namco platformer, New Play Control Donkey Kong Jungle Beat on store shelves.
It’s a light week for new releases at retailers, and many of the games coming out are arguably not new at all. A handful of remade ports and a compilation make up most of the notable releases this week, but don’t include the single most significant release.
That designation goes to Sony’s Patapon 2 for the PlayStation Portable. Not only is Patapon 2 the sequel to last year’s critically applauded new take on the rhythm game genre, but it’s also only available in downloadable form. Interested gamers can still pick up the $20 game from retailers, but they will only be buying a code which they must then use to download the game itself to the PSP. The sequel builds upon the foundation of the first game with new units, new abilities, a branching leveling system, and a brand-new multiplayer mode.
As for more vintage fare, this week sees the Wii release of Namco’s classic original PlayStation platformer Klonoa. The game has players controlling the floppy-eared mascot through 3D worlds, but on set paths that make for 2D gameplay. The Wii revamp features updated graphics, as well as the incorporation of motion controls. Purists who prefer to play with controls more akin to the original’s will have the option of using a Classic Controller or a GameCube pad.
Also out for the Wii this week is the latest GameCube redux from Nintendo’s New Play Control line, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. When the game first came out in 2005, it made use of the GameCube’s DK Bongo controller, letting players tap on the drums in order to command Donkey Kong through the platforming adventure game. That interface has been replaced with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, which make the game control more like a traditional platformer.
Other revamps this week include the DS debut of the PC turn-based strategy game Jagged Alliance, as well as Crysis: Maximum Edition, a compilation of the PC shooter Crysis, its multiplayer mode Crysis Wars, and the stand-alone expansion Crysis Warhead.
