Halo movie director no longer interested in adaptation – Report

District 9 and live-action short director Neil Blomkamp said he “probably wouldn’t do Halo if it was offered” due to lingering bitterness over project’s unraveling.

This week’s announcement that Spider-Man director Sam Raimi will direct the long-in-gestation Warcraft movie
was greeted by near-universal praise. The reaction was quite different, though, in August 2006 when Microsoft announced that a virtual unknown had signed on to direct the big-screen version of Halo.

Though South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp had the full backing of Halo executive producer Peter Jackson (the Lord of the Rings films), skepticism was rampant elsewhere. The sci-fi shooter series’ rabid fans worried that his advertising background might make him susceptible to Hollywood producers’ demands. Conversely, the two studios bankrolling the Halo movie with Microsoft, Fox and Universal, were reportedly so concerned by Blomkamp’s inexperience and the project’s budget that they suspended production indefinitely.

For its part, Microsoft had enough faith in Blomkamp to commission him to direct a series of live-action shorts in the lead-up to Halo 3’s launch (viewable below). The gritty segments’ reception was largely positive, raising hopes that after the release of his forthcoming film District 9, executive-produced by Jackson, he might return to the mothballed Halo movie.

Now, any such hopes have been all but dashed–by Blomkamp himself. Speaking with cinema blog Slashfilm at
Comic-Con 2009 in San Diego, the currently Vancouver-based filmmaker expressed both a love of the Halo universe and an intense bitterness over the multimillion-dollar unraveling.

“I probably wouldn’t do [the] Halo [movie] if it was offered to me,” he told Slashfilm. “But creatively, I would like to do it. It’s kind of like I’d be sad to not work on it, but I would still say no. I worked on it for five months’I put a lot of sort of sweat and blood into Halo. Creatively, it’s very compelling. I love it. But, when you work that long on something and you have it bottom out and collapse’I mean, I got District 9 out of it, I think I’m probably better off because it’s more of a personal film. But yeah, I love the world of Halo. [But] I don’t think I would go back there.”

Based on Blomkamp’s short “Alive in Joburg,” District 9 tells the tale of a group of alien refugees who land outside Johannesburg. Stranded on Earth, they are ghettoized and persecuted by humanity, leading to a deadly showdown. Blomkamp’s other works include several short films: the minithriller “Yellow,” the Robocop-esque “Tetra Vaal,” and the Futurama-meets-The Office-like satire “Tempbot.”

OTX: Call Of Duty Brand Return Helps Modern Warfare 2 (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)

While Halo 3: ODST continues to have a "commanding lead" in purchase intent over all forthcoming video games, Modern Warfare 2’s placing surged, with the Call Of Duty name re-addition "contributing" to the shift, according to OTX data provided exclusively to Gamasutra.

OTX recently noted that consumer awareness levels for the game dropped 20 percent after apparent indication that the Call Of Duty name would be omitted. However, with the game’s box retaining the CoD brand, it appears that retail consumers, at least, will be aware of the game’s connection to the franchise.

The confirmation of the "Call of Duty" branding on Modern Warfare 2’s box art — and the re-addition of this part of the name to the survey — halfway through OTX’s data period for these charts "undoubtedly contributed to the positive movement," the firm added, expecting both awareness and purchase intent surrounding the title to further rise next month.

Modern Warfare 2 to be "biggest entertainment launch ever" – Activision

Megapublisher tasks high-powered ad agency to top Grand Theft Auto IV’s day-one sales total of 3.6 million units and $310 million.

“What would Don Draper do?”

That’s probably a question being asked in the Los Angeles offices of TBWA/Chiat/Day, the global ad agency that has been retained by Activision. According to the online edition of
Advertising Age, the company has been given a task worthy of the Mad Men fictional marketing master–making the November 10 launch of Modern Warfare 2 the “biggest entertainment launch of all time.”

“We believe the idea that TBWA presented to us delivers on that goal,” Activision chief creative officer Brad Jakeman told the magazine. “What we liked most about the TBWA campaign is that it’s an idea that’s big enough to be articulated in lots of different kind of media…that is always the acid test for a great idea.”

The first non-teaser trailers for Modern Warfare 2 had high-profile debuts during the NBA Finals telecasts in May. Besides television, TBWA’s marketing campaign is expected to target billboards, print, online outlets, social media, and “out of home advertising,” a blanket term that covers billboards, digital displays, and other signage.

According to Advertising Age, Activision is specifically aiming to top the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV, published by rival Take-Two Interactive. That game’s global launch on April 29, 2008, saw 3.6 million units of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 actioner generate $310 million in global sales in 24 hours. That total beat the previous launch-day sales record set by Halo 3 on September 22, 2007, which saw 1.7 million copies of the Xbox 360-exclusive sci-fi shooter bring in over $170 million in revenue.

It’s not just Activision that’s making bold predictions for Modern Warfare 2. “We believe Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will likely be the largest video game release for [calendar year] ‘09,” said Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey in a note last week. He believes that the game will likely
sell 11.1 million copies worldwide in less than two months.

Halo 3: ODST, God of War III top E3 favorites – Survey

Nielsen study released yesterday reveals the top 12 games presented at the expo that are most likely to be purchased by gamers.

According to a June 8 report by research group Nielsen, New Super Mario Bros. Wii garnered the most online “buzz” at this month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. However, a report released this week indicates that such ephemeral attention might not translate into hard sales.

The survey asked gamers which games presented at E3 they were definitely or probably interested in purchasing. Some 53 percent of respondents were likely to purchase Halo 3: ODST, with 49 percent for God of War III. On the other end of the list, The Beatles: Rock Band ranked last at 12th with 30 percent.

One interesting factoid by Nielsen is that there were no massive changes in interest in the 12 titles from pre-E3 to post-E3. As the research group puts it, “In other words, games that already tugged at gamers’ hearts held on.”

The results of Nielsen’s June 7 to 14 survey are listed below, along with a video of GameSpot’s Halo 3: ODST demo.

TITLE – RELEASE DATE – PERCENTAGE INTERESTED
1) Halo 3:ODST – September 22, 2009 – 53%
2) God of War III – March 2010 – 49%
3) Wii Sports Resort – WII – July 26, 2009 – 45%

4) Guitar Hero 5 – September 1, 2009 – 42%
5) Final Fantasy XIII – Q2 2010 – 37%
6) Madden NFL 10 – August 14, 2009 – 35%
7) Guitar Hero: Van Halen – Q3 2009 – 34%
8) Assassins Creed 2 – November 17, 2009 – 32%
9) Need for Speed: Shift – September 22, 2009 – 32%
10) Need for Speed: Nitro – Q3 2009 – 32%
11) NCAA Football 10 – July 14, 2009 – 32%

Microsoft E3 2009 Press Conference liveblog–June 1, 10:30 a.m.

Following weeks of rumors of a motion-sensing camera and a Metal Gear Solid 4 port, the software giant unveils its latest Xbox 360 and Games for Windows offerings.

LOS ANGELES–At its press event at the 2008 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft dropped a series of major announcements. Following a pseudo-price drop for the 20GB Xbox 360 Core, the company showed off the New Xbox Live Experience, which introduced a new dashboard, Netflix streaming, and Xbox Live avatars last November. The company also touted Fallout 3 downloadable content “exclusives” for the PC and Xbox 360–which are now also coming to the PlayStation 3. Last but certainly not least, Microsoft shocked JRPG fans by revealing that not only was Square Enix bringing Final Fantasy XIII to the Xbox 360, it was holding back the PS3 version so the two could launch simultaneously.

If rumors are to be believed, a similar shocker might be in store for Microsoft’s press event at E3 2009, which is the first official conference of the show. The past several weeks have seen rumors swirl about an Xbox 360 version of the most popular PlayStation 3 exclusive to date, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Also rumored to be on hand are the new Peter Molyneux game and a motion-sensing camera controller for the Xbox 360. Already revealed games such as Alan Wake, Halo 3: ODST, and Forza Motorsport 3 are also expected, and naturally the event will have a few surprises.

To see exactly what Microsoft will have in store, bookmark this page and come back at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 1, for a live blog of the event. GameSpot will also be streaming live video of the event–as well as those of Sony and Nintendo–alongside the blog as part of its wide-ranging E3 coverage.

WoW, Now It’s Drinkable (World of Warcraft)

BeefJack writes: "Mt. Dew has provided us with the caffeine we needed to play video game ever since we discovered them. Back in 2007, PepsiCo. showed their support for us when they came up with a citrus-cherry flavored soda called Game Fuel. Game Fuel was a limited product that featured Master Chief from Halo 3 on the bottle. Because it was limited, it is no longer sold, and sorely missed."
