Grand Theft Auto IV

What does the American Dream mean today? For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is (more…)

FPS – First Person Shooter Games

Among the biggest sellers in online PC games are FPS, or First Person Shooter, games.

Kids love ‘em. So do most Dads.

Many moms think the level of violence is too high and too graphic, so Dad and the kids play them when she is not looking.

FPS games are centered on you, the player, from your point of view. Armed with various handheld weapons, you might be called on to thwart the invasion of Earth by aliens or to stop a Nazi advance in WWII. As a player, you interact directly with the game environment from your own perspective.

FPS games evolved in the late 1990s as PCs became powerful enough to render the 3D graphics in real time. These are way beyond the arcade shooters from Space Invaders on up.

Several sub-genres of FPS have distinguished themselves:

tactical – most have a military motif

stealth – avoiding detection by opponents is a major element

run and gun – among the most popular with multiple enemies and fast-paced action

real-time strategy (RTS) – able to give commands to other units and control the strategy

first person adventure (FPA) – free roaming adventure which takes one to the edge, like the controversial series Grand Theft Auto

Most FPS games take graphics to a new level of realism while exaggerating the attributes of the player. You now likely have muscles and strength that make Arnold look like a girlie-man.

Kids and adults alike love the frantic blasting of enemies within the context of heroic storylines.

While FPS games are demanding on your reflexes, they are also demanding on your PC. You will definitely have a need for speed, as well as a good graphics card and a decent set of speakers. The demands of gamers have pushed the PC industry to make better desktop computers for all.

The next big shift – with broadband Internet service now in millions of homes worldwide – will be the delivery of the latest FPS game to your PC via streaming download instead of CD. As more gamers accept online streaming delivery of the game itself, costs should come down over time as the game developers turn to online delivery and bypass the CD/DVD publishers and retailers in the supply chain.

For the game developers, online delivery of FPS games represents an opportunity to open up a new market of gamers who would be willing to try FPS online, but who never visit EB Games, the Electronics Boutique, or other game retailers in the mall.

For those who want to try/demo any number of FPS games, I recommend the Triton player. This streaming download allows you to begin play well before the entire download is completed. You can even demo recent releases like Prey from 3D Realms.

You can register free and download the player at: http://www. playtriton. com

As long as there are heroes and villains, and kids with vivid imaginations, there will be a place for FPS games when the aliens come calling.

FPS – First Person Shooter – games came of age in the 1990s with more powerful desktop computers and 3D graphics. FPS games are now available to demo online using the free Triton Player (www. playtriton. com) and a broadband Internet connection.

Dumb things your folks say about games (Grand Theft Auto IV)

Mums are genetically programmed to stop you doing the things you like. As you get older, perhaps you start to understand their reasoning – even perhaps admitting they’re right. But not when it comes to videogames.

We’re sure you’ve heard these utterances more times that you can remember. So have a listen next time you’re playing and see how many you can hear. Collect the …

Grand Theft Auto film all but ruled out

Dan Houser disbelieves open-world crime games could be turned into two-hour movie, says Rockstar would have to have creative control of any such project.

This week saw Rockstar Games announce an October 29 release date for the second Xbox 360-exclusive expansion of Grand Theft Auto IV, the Ballad of Gay Tony. At the same time, one of the developer’s co-founders all but ruled out the chance of there ever being a Grand Theft Auto movie.

“We don’t believe that the Grand Theft Auto games, which are massive in scope and structurally complex, can be adequately compressed into a two-hour movie,” Rockstar creative vice president Dan Houser told the Los Angeles Times.

Houser, whose brother Sam is Rockstar’s president and a co-creator of the GTA series, went on to bemoan the low level of game-to-film adaptations to date. “It seems obvious to us that maintaining the long-term integrity of any entertainment property has been dependent on not making substandard spin-off products to people whose primary interest is making a quick buck,” he opined. Though Houser did not name any specific game-based movies, one does not need to go far to find examples of such critical and commercial failures, with the Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li being the most recent example.

Houser’s comments echoed those he gave in February 2008 following reports that Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive was in advanced negotiations to license a GTA film, possibly starring Eminem. However, he did lay out the conditions that would have to be met in the unlikely event a GTA movie was made.

“If we ever decide to do a film, it will be because we have resolved our creative doubts, and while retaining enough control to ensure that if the movie is terrible, at least we will know we ruined the property ourselves,” declared the veteran developer.

ESA sues Chicago Transit Authority over game ads

Gaming trade group claims policy to not allow AO-, M-rated games to be advertised on buses, trains an unconstitutional violation of free speech.

The Entertainment Software Association is taking the Chicago Transit Authority to court. Earlier today, the gaming publisher trade group announced the filing of a lawsuit to overturn a CTA policy prohibiting ads for games rated M for Mature or AO for Adults Only on its buses, trains, and buildings.

The suit–and the CTA policy that spawned it–have their roots in another legal dust-up. In the lead-up to Grand Theft Auto IV’s April 2008 debut on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, a Chicago news channel reported on a series of ads for the open-world action game appearing on public transit buildings and buses. The CTA pulled the ads, fearful of public outcry, and in response, GTA IV publisher Take-Two Interactive sued the transit authority. The suit was eventually settled with an agreement for the CTA to re-run the ads later that year.

However, after the settlement, the CTA updated its advertising guidelines with the ratings prohibition and set the policy to take effect January 1, 2009. The amended guidelines do not prevent advertising for R-rated films or TV-MA-rated television shows. The ESA alleges that this is an unconstitutional abridgement of its members free speech rights because the policy now “restricts speech in a public forum that is otherwise open to all speakers without a compelling interest for doing so.”

The compelling interest stated by the CTA in enacting the policy was a correlation between youth aggression and violent games. That’s the same justification used by states like California, Illinois, and Louisiana in their heretofore unsuccessful bids to establish state laws to keep violent games out of children’s hands.

The CTA had not returned a request for comment as of press time.
