Saboteur laying charges Dec. 8

Pandemic Studios’ open-world action adventure set in Nazi-occupied Paris sets sights on Xbox 360, PS3, PC later this year.

EA’s Pandemic Studios has been on a tepid run of late, having disappointed critics first with Mercenaries 2: World in Flames in August 2008 and then again with Lord of the Rings: Conquest early this year. With its latest effort, The Saboteur, being a centerpiece to EA’s 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference last month, Pandemic Studios will soon have a chance to end its cold streak.

Today, EA and Pandemic announced that The Saboteur will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on December 8. Having been announced in March 2007, The Saboteur’s final deadline marks the end of a protracted development cycle that saw EA purchase Pandemic, along with fellow VG Holding Corp. partner BioWare, for $860 million.

The Saboteur brings a stylish twist to the all-too-familiar World War II genre. Instead of the traditional linear structure of most WWII shooters, The Saboteur is an open-world action adventure game a la Mercenaries. Taking the role of Irish-racecar-driver-turned-resistance-fighter Sean Devlin, players are encouraged to wreak covert havoc upon the Third Reich in Nazi-occupied France.

Uncharted 2, Scribblenauts top Game Critics’ E3 Awards

Naughty Dog’s PS3-exclusive sequel wins Best of Show, 5TH Cell’s DS puzzler honored for Best Original Game by industry media collaboration.

By some accounts, the Entertainment Software Association delivered on its promise of restoring the Electronic Entertainment Expo to its prominent position as a premier event for the gaming industry. With the 2009 show now in the bag, the Game Critics Awards committee has handed out its verdict of which work-in-progress games made the biggest splash.

A highlight of Sony’s press conference, Naughty Dog’s PlayStation 3-exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves scored top honors, taking Best of Show, Best Console Game, and Best Action Adventure Game. 5TH Cell’s Scribblenauts for the DS also built upon its preseason awards run. Having been named Game of the Show as part of GameSpot’s E3 2009 Editors’ Choice Awards, the ambitious puzzler earned Game Critics accolades for Best Original Game and Best Handheld Game.

From a single-studio standpoint, BioWare outperformed the rest. Having garnered a number of nominations for all three of its current high-profile projects, Star Wars: The Old Republic was named Best PC Game while Mass Effect 2 earned recognition as Best Role-Playing Game. The two games shut out Dragon Age: Origins, which was also nominated for both categories.

The Game Critics Awards are doled out by a cross section of 29 mainstream and enthusiast gaming media outlets, with the panel of judges hailing from such online and print publications as GameSpot, the Los Angeles Times, Wired, and USA Today. To qualify for an award, the game must be shown in a playable form running on its native platform.

Assassin’s Creed 2 team tops 450

Ubisoft producer Sebastien Puel says sequel to 2007 action adventure boasts team size three times that of best-selling predecessor; 75 percent of original devs returned.

Ubisoft likely had high hopes for its Montreal studio’s 2007 release Assassin’s Creed, but even the publisher’s forecasts were way off the mark when it came to the action adventure’s actual sales performance. After a series of dramatic upward earnings revisions, Ubisoft revealed last May that Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 helped push the publisher to a 36 percent annual revenue hike, nearly tripling profits in the process.

Unsurprisingly, then, Ubisoft is putting its full weight behind Assassins’ Creed 2. Speaking to UK-based gaming site NowGamer, producer Sebastien Puel said that more than 450 people are at work on Assassin’s Creed 2, with 75 percent of the original team having returned to work on the sequel. Putting that figure into context, Puel went on to note that the Assassin’s Creed 2 team “is about three times the size of the team of the first game.”

Puel also emphasized the importance of carrying over such a significant portion of the original team. “Making [Assassin's Creed] from A to Z took around four years,” he said. “It’s a very good thing we are keeping most of the core members who envisioned the first Assassin’s Creed. They know the project very well.” According to NowGamer, Puel also said that many of the “thousands of ideas” planned for the first game are now being implemented into its sequel.

Officially unveiled in April, Assassin’s Creed 2 is set in Renaissance-era Venice as well as the Tuscan countryside, following new protagonist Ezio. More information on the action adventure game is expected to arrive as part of the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, taking place in Los Angeles June 1-4.
